Mamie E. Locke, Ph.D.

Traveling From
Hampton, Virginia

Mamie understands that life is not a game of chance, but a game of choice. Having grown up as a young girl in the heart of Mississippi poverty, she helps others realize that poverty is not a disability. Her signature talk of “It is not where you are from or what you are born with that determines your greatness. It is what you do with what you have that matters” is a vivid example of her walk.

Mamie Locke is a state senator in the legislature of Virginia. She had served as the mayor of Hampton Virginia from 2000 to 2004. In that year, she resigned her position as mayor in order to assume the senatorial position. She is also a dean at Hampton University. As one of America’s greatest advocates for the power of education, she positively affects youth and adults daily.  Mamie is a prominent reseracher and speaker for women's issues, diversity and inclusion and equity.  She is one of the most sought after social justice speakers in our nation.
